Whitton United 3 Bocking Juniors 1 (AET)
Whitton United travelled to Stanway Rovers to play in the final of the
Colchester Open Cup. Our opponents were Bocking Juniors of the Colchester
league.
After a delayed start of one and a half hours the match got under way. Bocking
were the team that settled into the game straight away. Whitton were a goal
down in the 22nd minute, which really ruffled a few feathers.
Half time came and went, but Whitton had to dig deep to find the grit and determination that has been with them all season and with a minute to full time Clarke
managed to lob the ball over the keeper to send the match into extra time.
The loyal supporters went mad and this was felt by all the lads on the pitch. Into extra time which was 2 x 5 minutes, so not alot of time to settle the game before penalties. The first 5 came and went with both teams playing very attractive football, so into the last 5 we went. With 1 minute remaining and penalties looming, Lapworth lifted the ball into the area and there was Jones to head the ball straight into the corner of the net. The players and the fans went loopy.
We had to hold on for a matter of seconds. But Szyszlyk had other ideas when he drove into the box and passed the ball to the feet of Lapworth, who converted it with style. This sealed our victory and gave us our 3rd cup in 3 weeks. Bocking had come so close to winning but the true Whitton spirit really did shine through today.
Well played to Bocking Juniors boys for a truly memorable game and their good
sportmanship on and off the pitch. Thanks to the Colchester League for a
well organised event and Stanway Rovers for their facilities.
Well played to ALL the boys and thanks to Mary and Kevin.
