On what was considered prefect playing conditions at King George the 5th Playing field both sides started with 4 – 4 – 2 formation. The first real attack came from Whitton United after 3 minutes which saw Kevin Inglis let go a shot from 25 yards after a long throw was headed out by the March Town defence. This shot was easily saved by D Heats in the March Town goal.
For the next 10 minutes both sides had settle down early well passing the ball around nicely and crisply; only the final delivery or pass letting down either team. After 20 minutes Whitton Utd went close again after good play from Joshua Brown releasing Anton Clarke who’s shot was blocked by S Welcher (March Town defender) which led a corner being awarded to Whitton United.
The resulting corner was taken by Kevin Inglis who whipped over a wicked looking cross that was met by the head of Matt Cunningham. This header was goal bound but instead it clipped the heels of Anton Clarke and went wide of the goal!
However, the game first goal fell to March Town. This resulted in March Town being awarded a freekick just outside the Whitton Utd 18 yard box. This was quickly taken by D Egcorcio as Whitton were still adjusting and getting ready for the freekick. Whilst Whitton United were doing that, L Pepper stole in unmarked to head home from close range.
Even though March Town were 1 goal up, they were not resting on their laurels and pressing for a second. The same could be said for Whitton Utd who themselves were pressing hard to get back on level terms.
This endeavour paid dividends for Whitton United as their continuance to play good music resulted to them scoring. Once again this came from a freekick which time was awarded to Whitton United from about 35 yards out from the March Town goal. It was floated into the area by Kevin Inglis, which after huge commotion within that area saw Luke Reid get a glance on the ball which saw the ball float into the back of the net.
Deep into Injury time and after 48 mins Whitton United took the lead after being awarded a corner which was taken by Kevin Inglis. Matt Cunningham proving a handful to the March Town defence in freekick and corner situations rose above everyone else to head home from close range again. This time there was no Anton Clarke blocking his header from goal!
Half Time – Whitton Utd 2 v 1 March Town
With no changes being made to either side during the interval, both sides continued to play great attacking football. However, after 55 minutes Whitton United produced the best moment in the match. Lovely free flowing football which saw 7 Whitton Utd players taking part in eventually ending with a deft flick by Joshua Brown, who put through Anton Clarke who slotted home from close range.
Whitton United increased the score line even further after 60 minutes when sloppy play by March Town in the final 3RD of the Whitton United area broke down, which allowed Whitton Utd to counter and break at the March Town Defence. Oliver Brown cleverly fed his brother Joshua Brown on the right wing with a nicely weighed pass. He himself being the clear, looked up and delivered a "Beckham like Cross" which found Anton Clarke who had stolen in like a thief in the night to volley home from close range.
Whitton Utd scored once again minute later (61 minutes) after some good free flowing football which saw Joshua Brown putting through once again Anton Clarke who clipped his shot over the advancing D Heats .
Whitton Utd took the foot of the pedal so to speak and allowed March Town to continue to press forward. This pressing eventually led to them pulling back a goal. Substitute A Bryan managed to convert from close range after a freekick was only half cleared. It fell to A Bryan within the 6 yard box which slotted the ball home.
Final Score – Whitton Utd 5 v 2 March Town
